981-1995 Toyota Pickup 2.4L 22R-E 4-Cylinder Engine Motor 22r 22re

Description

The Toyota 22R-E is arguably the most famous engine Toyota ever produced. Powering the legendary “Hilux” pickups from 1981 through 1995, it earned a global reputation for being virtually indestructible. If you are looking at a replacement motor, it is vital to distinguish between the 22R (Carbureted) and the 22R-E (Fuel Injected), as well as the “Laser Block” changes that occurred in 1985.

 Engine Specifications

The 22R-E is a SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) 8-valve engine. It wasn’t built for speed; it was built for torque and longevity.

Feature Specification
Displacement 2.4 Liters (2,366 cc)
Valvetrain SOHC, 8-Valve, Chain-driven
Horsepower 105–112 hp @ 4,800 RPM
Torque 137–142 lb-ft @ 3,400 RPM
Block Material Cast Iron
Head Material Aluminum

🔍 22R vs. 22R-E: The Difference

  • 22R: Uses a carburetor. It is mechanically simpler but requires manual tuning for altitude and temperature.

  • 22R-E: Features Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI). This “E” designation brought better fuel economy, more consistent cold starts, and a slight bump in horsepower.

Note: Most long blocks are physically compatible between the two, but you must swap your specific intake manifold and fuel delivery system to match your truck’s harness.

 The 1985 “Laser Block” Transition

If you are buying a long block for a 1981–1984 truck, it is different from the 1985–1995 version.

  1. Early Block (1981–1984): Features a “tall deck.” The water jackets and timing cover are specific to these years. These heads have round exhaust ports.

  2. Late “Laser” Block (1985–1995): Features a “short deck” (shorter by about 2mm). These are the most common engines found today. These heads have pear-shaped exhaust ports.

Warning: You cannot put a 1985+ head on a 1984- block without significant modifications. Always match the year of your block to your existing hardware.

🔧 The “Achilles Heel”: Timing Chain Guides

While the 22R-E is bulletproof, it has one well-known maintenance requirement: The Timing Chain.

  • The Issue: The factory timing chain guides are made of plastic. Over 100,000+ miles, the chain can stretch and slap against the guides, eventually shattering them.

  • The Danger: Once the guides break, the metal chain will rub against the aluminum timing cover. Eventually, it eats a hole into the water passage, dumping coolant directly into your oil—often mistaken for a blown head gasket.

  • The Fix: When installing a new engine, ensure it has steel-backed timing chain guides. This permanent fix ensures the chain can never eat through the timing cover.

Why It’s the King of the Off-Road

  • Low-End Grunt: The engine makes its peak torque very low in the RPM range (3,400 RPM), which is perfect for rock crawling or pulling heavy loads through mud.

  • Simplicity: There are no complex electronics compared to modern engines. A basic set of wrenches and a timing light are all you need for most repairs.

  • Thermal Mass: The heavy iron block holds heat well and resists warping, though the aluminum head must be monitored for overheating to prevent gasket failure.
